President Trump’s Plans Represent the Gold Standard in Pro-Immigrant Policy

The future of immigration reform is in limbo. Who shoulders the blame? There can only be one answer: The Democrats.

Since the president’s first day in the White House, Democrats in Congress have tried to undermine him in every way they can. The Democrats have always portrayed themselves as siding with immigrants, but in actuality, it’s the White House and the Republicans who have been working hard to come up with the most sensible solutions. That’s particularly true on the issue of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

Unfortunately, Democrats in Congress would rather flood the country with illegal immigrants than keep our communities safe or work toward a fix for DACA.

After years and years of a failed immigration system, the president has finally introduced common sense immigration reform. That includes a pathway to citizenship for dreamers; getting rid of the disastrous Diversity Visa Lottery; funding for enhanced border security, which includes building of the border wall; and implementing a merit-based system that allows individuals to come into the United States who can contribute to our economy. Our current system is completely outdated as it lacks proper vetting capabilities, which presents significant vulnerabilities to the safety and security of the American people.

Not only have Americans overwhelmingly shown support for the White House’s immigration plans, many Latinos support it as well. Unfortunately, the mainstream media refuses to show the range of support for the president’s policies, let alone his immigration policies.

I have heard first-hand from Latinos across our nation that they believe the president is absolutely right on immigration. Many of these individuals are people who immigrated to the United States legally. They believe in strong border control to prevent illegal immigration and the flow of potential criminals into their community; they believe that everyone should be able to contribute to the economy; and they wouldn’t want their jobs taken away by another immigrant who came here illegally.

As the son of two immigrants from Venezuela, I understand how fundamentally important immigration is to this country. But what supersedes the necessity of immigration is the safety of our citizens and of our country.

As President Trump has said, “Immigration is a privilege, not a right.” We need to ensure that we only have the best of the best individuals immigrating here, not only for the matter of national security but to also contribute to our way of lives.

The Democrats have sought to portray otherwise but the president is bringing a sense of unity to our country by doing everything in his power to keep us safe from all threats, foreign and domestic. And he has welcomed with open arms those immigrants who are able to properly contribute

It is a shame that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and his colleagues have failed to face the truth — that the policies they proudly support are the very ones that put our national security at risk. And it is a shame that they would defend illegal immigrants rather than put our citizens and our country first.

The president, his Cabinet and the Republicans in Congress, on the other hand, are doing the right thing: putting America First.
